Carreno explains why Ighalo was left out in Al-Wehda’s loss to Al-Ahli
Al-Wehda head coach, Jose Daniel Carreno, has said that Odion Ighalo was not in the starting line-up against Al-Ahli because of tiredness and a tactical decision.
Fans were surprised to see the Nigerian striker on the bench in the 3-2 defeat, as he has been an important player for the team in recent matches.
Ighalo has scored six goals and made two assists in 29 games this season. In his last five league games, he contributed one goal and two assists, helping Al-Wehda to three wins.
Speaking after the match, Carreno told reporters, as quoted by aawsat, that Ighalo needed rest and the decision was also based on the way Al-Ahli play.
“Ighalo played in previous matches and was feeling tired physically,” said the coach.
“From a tactical view, Al-Ahli’s central defenders are used to Ighalo’s style, so I chose faster players in attack.”
Without their experienced striker, Al-Wehda could not secure a result at the King Abdul Aziz Stadium, adding more pressure as they continue their fight against relegation in the Saudi Pro League.
Ighalo, known for performing well in big games, is expected to return when Al-Wehda face Al-Okhdood Club on Thursday, May 1, at the Prince Hathloul bin Abdulaziz Sports City.
Carreno hopes the former Super Eagles star will be ready to help the team avoid the drop.
