Carrick Backs Iheanacho to Shine for Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has expressed confidence in Kelechi Iheanacho’s ability to make a big impact for the club as they push for promotion to the English Premier League.

The Nigerian forward joined Boro on loan from Sevilla but is yet to find the net for the Championship side. After a difficult start in Spain, the 28-year-old was hoping for a fresh chapter in England, but his wait for a first Middlesbrough goal continues.

Despite his struggles, Carrick believes Iheanacho’s experience and dedication will prove vital in the final stretch of the season.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Carrick highlighted Iheanacho’s influence in the squad and his commitment to improving his form.

“That’s what it takes now. Kel is a big part of the group, and he’s important because of his experience and character,” Carrick said.

“The way he trains and carries himself is a good example to the younger lads. It has taken him a few games to reach full sharpness, but I’m sure he’ll have a big impact for us before the season ends.”

The former Manchester United midfielder also praised Iheanacho for working hard during the international break, despite not being included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“That extra training and taking care of himself show his attitude and mentality. People don’t always see that side, but it’s a big part of being a good professional,” Carrick added.

Middlesbrough currently sit 8th in the Championship, just three points off the playoff spots. With only eight matches left, Carrick believes every player has a role to play in the club’s bid for promotion.

“There are eight games to go, and even one moment can be crucial now,” he said. “It would be wrong to single anyone out because anyone in the squad can step up. Hopefully, we have a few players who deliver in these final games.”

Iheanacho has scored just three goals in 18 appearances across all competitions this season, making it one of the most challenging campaigns of his career. However, with Carrick’s backing and Middlesbrough fighting for a return to the top flight, the Nigerian striker still has time to turn things around.
