President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action by clearing the long-standing debt owed by the Federal Government to various national sports teams, including the Super Eagles.
The official statement, released on Sunday via Tinubu’s Media Centre’s X handle, outlined the comprehensive nature of the payment. The settlement encompasses the salaries of senior national team coaches, spanning an outstanding period of 15 months, along with the fulfillment of allowances and commitments owed to both the senior national teams, female squads, and the Under-20 national team.
The statement from Tinubu’s Media Centre highlighted, “President @officialABAT has approved the payment of N12 billion outstanding backlog for Nigeria’s National teams of various sports, which includes Super Eagles and others.”
“This initiative involves clearing the senior national team coach salaries, covering a period of 15 months, and fulfilling the financial commitments such as allowances and promises owed to the senior national teams, female teams, and the Under-20 national team.”
This commendable action by President Tinubu comes at a crucial juncture as the Super Eagles of Nigeria gear up for their participation in the highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to commence later this month.
The financial boost is expected to not only alleviate the burden on the national sports teams but also serve as a morale booster, fostering an environment of focus and dedication as they represent the nation on the continental stage.
With these outstanding payments now settled, Nigeria’s sports fraternity can look forward to a more stable and supportive environment, enabling the athletes to concentrate fully on their preparations and performance in the upcoming tournaments.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles wil today, Monday, January 8 take on Guinea in a AFCON preparatory game in Abu Dhabi.
After the game, the Eagles will fly back to Nigeria where the team will be sentforth, as they attempt to clinch a fourth continental crown at the 34th AFCON to be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire.
