CHAN Qualifiers: Ghana, Nigeria rivalry headlines Cape Coast meeting today

The arch rivalry between Ghana and West African Neighbors Nigeria will continue today Sunday August 28, 2022 at the Cape Coast Stadium as both countries battle for a place at the 2023 Championship of African Nations -CHAN.

 

How the Black Stars of Ghana stopped Nigeria’s Super Eagles from qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup will headline previews ahead of the 5pm kickoff (Nigerian time) .

 

HEAD TO HEAD 

Ghana and Nigeria have met 11 times in the men’s senior category . Their only Championship of African Nations meeting ended in a 0-0 draw .

 

At full International level , Ghana and Nigeria have recorded 4 wins apiece and 2 draws.

 

The draws a 0-0 result at the Cape Coast Stadium on 25th March 2022 followed by a 1-1 scoreline on 29th March to deny Nigeria a 2022 World Cup spot on the away goal rule.

 

ROAD TO ALGERIA 2023 

The 2023 edition of the Championship of African Nations-CHAN will take place in Algeria . Ghana and Nigeria did not take part in the 2019 edition and will battle over two legs for a place in Algeria .

 

Nigeria was drawn Bye for the last qualifying round while Ghana’s Black Galaxies secured a 4-0 aggregate win over Benin Republic in July 2022 .

 

Ghana host Nigeria in the first leg at the Cape Coast Stadium in Ghana today with the return leg billed for the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja Nigeria , on September 3, 2022 .

 

The aggregate winner will join 17 others for the 2023 CHAN a tournament introduced by CAF for players plying their trade in their countries domestic league .

 

The away goal rule will apply if both games end in a draw . If game remains a draw , penalties will be required to determine the winner (No extra time).

 

42 African countries entered the draw for a place in Algeria 2023 , the 7th edition in the competition history.
