Chelle Reveals How He Became Super Eagles Head Coach

New Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has revealed the steps that led to his appointment as manager of Nigeria’s senior national team.

In a recent interview with CANAL+SPORT Afrique, the Malian tactician explained that he never lobbied for the job, but was simply selected by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) based on the strength of his ideas and vision.

Chelle was officially named Super Eagles head coach in January, a decision that came as a surprise to many, considering the number of high-profile names linked with the role. His appointment also marked a historic moment, as he became the first African to take charge of the three-time African champions.

Speaking about the process, Chelle said:

“When I left the Malian team, there was a call for applications from the NFF, and so I applied like any other coach. Then the interview came.”

The 46-year-old added that he was invited to a coaches’ conference where he presented his project, vision, and philosophy to NFF officials.

“I thought it would happen much faster, but due to some events, I had to wait,” Chelle explained. “So I left for Rouen. But then this opportunity came up again – and it was a risk I was willing to take. I returned, because I believe in this great project.”

Chelle’s appointment signals a new era for Nigerian football, with fans hoping his clear vision and leadership can take the Super Eagles to greater heights.
