Chelsea are reportedly back to discuss the transfer of the only player in an exclusive list that includes the great Diego Armando Maradona, and Kylian Mbappe.
The London club has been on the lookout for midfield reinforcement and are said to be back for a move for Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez.
A move from Benfica to Chelsea seemed done when the winter transfer opened but there was a breakdown after the London club reportedly shifted goal post.
According to reports, Chelsea had promised to pay Benfica Enzo Fernández’s €120m release clause in installments to seal the move, but they budged.
Instead of activating the €120m (£105m) release clause, they offered £79m+ Ziyech (permanent) Andrey Santos and David Fofana both on loans.
A move that annoyed Benfica who then shut the door and insisted that the release clause be activated or no deal.
Now Chelsea have reportedly come back into the deal, desperate to land a midfield reinforcement before the end of the transfer window in a few days.
According to various reports, Chelsea have now offered €120m for Enzo Fernández, with €80m paid upfront.
Transfer specialist, Fabrizio Romano has said Benfica president Rui Costa has still no intention to accept — but Chelsea will insist to get the deal done now.
With a few days to the end of winter transfer and Benfica 7 points ahead of second-place Braga, it might be difficult for them to let go of one of their best players.
📊 Only three players have won both World Cup and the Best Young player award in the same World Cup
▪️🇧🇷 Pelé (1958)
▪️🇫🇷 Mbappé (2018)
▪️🇦🇷 ENZO (2022)
The question is will Chelsea be able to get the 22-year-old midfielder who is the only of three players to have won the Best Young Player award and World Cup in the same year?
