Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League took a hit after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues started the match strongly but it was Ipswich who scored first. On-loan Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso finished off Ben Johnson’s cross to net his first goal for the club.
Enciso then set up Ipswich’s second goal with a brilliant cross to the far post, where Johnson headed in his first goal of the season, giving the visitors a surprising 2-0 lead at half-time.
Just 20 seconds into the second half, Chelsea got one back when Axel Tuanzebe accidentally put the ball into his own net.
Chelsea kept pushing and finally got the equaliser ten minutes from time. Substitute Jadon Sancho curled a lovely shot into the top corner from a short corner routine.
Trevor Chalobah and Pedro Neto both had chances to win it for Chelsea, but the match ended in a draw.
The result leaves Chelsea in fifth place — three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest and just ahead of Aston Villa on goal difference.
Ipswich remain deep in trouble, 14 points from safety, after Wolves beat Tottenham at Molineux.
