Chiamaka Nnadozie Delighted After Super Falcons’ Strong Start at WAFCON
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was full of joy after Nigeria’s 3–0 win over Tunisia in their opening match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Group B.
The victory came through goals from Asisat Oshoala, Omorinsola Babajide and Chiwendu Ihezuo, giving coach Justin Madugu’s team all three points against the Carthage Eagles.
Nnadozie, who recently moved from Paris FC to Brighton and Hove Albion in England, didn’t have much to do during the match but praised her teammates’ effort and focus.
“I feel really good, it was a great start for us,” she said. “Tunisia are a decent team. We respect them a lot and, as you saw, they gave us a tough challenge, but today was our day.”
“They’ve got quality players and strong wingers. I believe they’ll become a top team in the near future. Even though we didn’t have much to deal with at the back, staying focused is always important, because anything can happen.”
Speaking about Nigeria’s chances of winning a record tenth WAFCON title, the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year stayed grounded.
“There are many strong teams in the competition, so we can’t say much now. We’ll just take it one game at a time. No need to rush or look too far ahead,” the 24-year-old said. “We had a great game today, and if we keep playing like this, hopefully our dream will come true.”
Nnadozie also opened up about her recent move to the English Women’s Super League, saying it wasn’t easy to leave Paris after five seasons.
“It was a hard decision. Paris feels like a second home to me. They welcomed me warmly and I really felt like part of the family there,” she said. “But it was time for a new challenge. Brighton is my new home now, and I hope it turns out to be even better.”
“I haven’t arrived in Brighton yet, but a lot of Nigerians there have messaged me, saying they’re excited to welcome me. I think it’s going to be a good experience.”
“For now though, my full focus is on WAFCON. The goal is clear — we want to lift the trophy.”
After their solid start, the Super Falcons are set to face Botswana on Thursday at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.
