Chimezie Metu suffers knee Injury, out for 6-8 Weeks
Nigerian basketball star Chimezie Metu faces a significant setback after sustaining a knee injury during FC Barcelona’s 102-99 victory over Valencia Basket in Spain’s Liga Endesa.
Details of the Injury
FC Barcelona confirmed that Metu suffered a grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee. According to the club’s medical team, he will be sidelined for six to eight weeks and will follow a conservative recovery plan.
The injury occurred during a collision with Valencia’s Reuvers while battling for a rebound. This untimely blow means Metu is likely to miss the final 13 games of 2024.
Strong Start to the Season
Metu, who joined Barcelona this season, has made a strong impression. In the EuroLeague, he averages 7.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and a 7.2 efficiency rating. In Liga Endesa, he has posted 11.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and an 11.8 efficiency rating.
Impact on Barcelona
The injury comes shortly after Barcelona lost teammate Nico Laprovittola to a long-term injury. With two key players out, the Blaugrana will need to adjust their strategy for the coming weeks as they compete in both domestic and European leagues.
Metu, a former University of Southern California standout and NBA veteran with 263 games under his belt, has brought experience and versatility to Barcelona.
