Christantus Uche shines as Getafe secure first win of the season
Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche delivered another standout performance as Getafe claimed their first win of the La Liga season, defeating Deportivo Alaves 2-0 at the Coliseum on Saturday.
The 22-year-old, who has been a pivotal figure in Getafe’s midfield, played a key role in helping his team secure maximum points, despite recent controversy following comments he made about racism in the league.
Getafe entered the match winless in seven games but showed early signs of determination. Uche nearly opened the scoring midway through the first half with a powerful shot inside the box, only for Alaves’ goalkeeper Antonio Sivera to deny him with a superb save.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Mauro Arambarri’s free-kick deflected off the wall and wrongfooted Sivera, giving Getafe a 1-0 lead.
After the interval, Getafe continued their dominant display, and their efforts were rewarded when the referee awarded a penalty for handball. Luis Milla confidently stepped up and converted from the spot, doubling the advantage with a well-placed shot into the bottom-left corner in the 58th minute.
Uche, who has been one of Getafe’s standout performers this season, shrugged off recent backlash following his candid interview about racism in Spanish football. The midfielder had been criticized by Getafe’s president for his remarks, but Uche remained focused and delivered a commanding performance, winning key midfield battles and linking up well with his teammates.
The win lifts Getafe to 14th place in the La Liga standings, offering them a much-needed boost in confidence as they look to build on this victory.
Getafe head coach Pepe Bordalas praised Uche’s resilience, saying, “Chrisantus has been immense for us this season. He’s handled pressure both on and off the field like a true professional, and his performance today showed his character.”
