Coco Gauff on lack of U.S. Fan support overseas
Coco Gauff has openly criticized the level of support American players receive when competing outside the United States, calling U.S. tennis fans “the worst” at backing their own abroad.
Speaking candidly, Gauff compared American support to that of smaller nations, which often travel in numbers and create a strong presence at international tournaments.
“I feel like we’re definitely, in tennis, the worst. I’ve always said I wish our country in other places would show up throughout the world as we see smaller countries support.”
Gauff pointed to a difference seen often on tour, where players from smaller countries are backed by loud, visible support wherever they play. For American players at overseas tournaments, that same presence is often missing.
This comment was not aimed at any particular group of fans and shouldn’t be taken that way. Gauff was simply expressing a desire for a larger fan base behind her and other U.S. players when competing abroad, and it wasn’t meant to upset the fans who already support her.
