Comoros makes history, books AFCON ticket for first time in history

Indian Ocean nation second smallest ever to qualify for AFCON

Tiny Indian Ocean country, Comoros Islands booked their place at the 2021 African Cup of Nations billed to take place in Cameroon with a game to spare following a 0-0 draw away against Togo in their fifth game of the qualifiers.

Comoros, who are ranked 130th in the world by FIFA were put in the same group with Egypt, Togo and Kenya, all of whom are seasoned participants in the biennial tournament. The small nation, with a population of just over one million people was able to amass 9 points in five games, remaining unbeaten and level on points with group leaders, Egypt who have also booked their place in Cameroon. They became part of the Confederation of African Football only 12 years ago and are the second smallest country to qualify for the AFCON ever after Cape Verde qualified in 2013.

Comoros join hosts Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana and fellow debutants Gambia in qualifying for the next edition of AFCON as the qualifying series are getting wrapped up in the coming days.
