Crisis rocks Rivers United camp as club suspends captain
NPFL side, Rivers United saw their season fall under a more intense scrutiny after goalkeeper and captain, Theophilus Afelokhai alongside fellow experienced center back, Ifeanyi Anaemena were handed indefinite suspensions from the club pending investigation into their unsportsmanlike conduct.
Both players, who were brought in from league rivals Enyimba in the off-season were given the suspension which took effect from today as a result of their “unethical and unprofessional conduct”.
In a statement from the official Twitter handle of the club, the management of the club handed both players the suspensions due to their unethical and unprofessional sportsman conduct, and while the suspensions take effect immediately, investigation into the case is ongoing. Both men were culpable for the third goal scored by Akwa United as their side got mauled 3-0 when they attempted a short goal kick routine and the ball from Anaemena to Afelokhai was very poor, allowing Morice Chukwu to pounce on the loose ball and score.
