Curry prefers winning with Golden State Warriors over personal records

Stephen Curry came agonisingly close to tying the NBA record for most three-pointers in a game against the Washington Wizards, but the Golden State Warriors star insists the only thing on his mind was getting the win.

Curry’s trailblazing season continued at the Verizon Center on Wednesday as he sank 11 of 16 efforts from beyond the arc in the Warriors’ 134-121 triumph, stretching their winning streak to eight matches.

The point guard became the first player in NBA history to make 11 or more three-pointers in a game on two occasions, but fell one short of the overall record held jointly by Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall.

Curry, the reigning NBA MVP, scored a career-high 36 first-half points en route to contributing 51 in total, and he insists he has no regrets about falling short of the three-point benchmark.

“At the end of the game I knew I was within reach. I was kind of searching but not trying to force where the game was,” he said.

“You can’t mess around with the basketball. You can’t chase the record if the game doesn’t call for it.

“We had a major emphasis on trying to start the game well knowing how explosive they are on the offensive end.

“I didn’t know it would shape up like that, but you make your first couple of shots and get a lucky bounce on one and then you start to build confidence.

“So it’s a fun feeling, and you want to ride it until you can’t anymore.”

Curry’s points haul was just three short of his career best against the New York Knicks three years ago, but felt his effort against the Wizards was a better performance.

“It just felt different. Those were kind of – if I remember correctly – just flurries. Two or three or four-minute stretches just going crazy,” he added.
