Damian Lillard Opens Up on “Unfortunate” Deep Vein Thrombosis Diagnosis
Milwaukee Bucks star guard Damian Lillard has spoken out after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right calf, a condition that has sidelined him indefinitely. The unexpected medical issue comes as a major setback for both Lillard and the Bucks, who are already struggling with inconsistency in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
“It’s Unfortunate”: Lillard Reacts to His Diagnosis
Shortly after the Bucks’ narrow 108-106 loss to the Phoenix Suns, Lillard addressed the situation in a heartfelt statement to NBA insider Chris Haynes.
“It’s unfortunate that something outside of my control would come up. Along with the Bucks’ medical staff, our priorities are to protect my health and safety. As much as I love basketball, I need to be there for my kids and my family. I’m grateful the Bucks acted quickly on this. They’ve been supportive and proactive throughout this process. I look forward to moving past this and continuing my career,” Lillard said.
The diagnosis has put his immediate future in doubt, leaving the Bucks without one of their top offensive weapons. Lillard, a nine-time All-Star, has been a crucial part of Milwaukee’s campaign, averaging 24.9 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game. His absence is a significant blow for a team that has lost six of its last ten games and fallen to fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Health First: Bucks Prioritise Lillard’s Recovery
Lillard’s condition is serious but treatable, and the Bucks’ medical staff is taking every precaution to ensure a safe recovery.
“Damian’s health is our No. 1 priority,” said Bucks General Manager Jon Horst. “We will support him as he moves through this weekly process of strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play. Doctors have indicated that his situation is very unlikely to occur again. We are thankful that this was identified and medicated quickly, which helps with the recovery.”
What’s Next for the Bucks?
With Lillard sidelined, the Bucks will have to adjust quickly. Giannis Antetokounmpo remains the team’s cornerstone, averaging 30.2 points, 12 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game, but the team’s depth will be tested in the crucial final stretch of the season.
Lillard’s condition also raises concerns about the long-term effects of DVT on his career. Similar cases have impacted players like Chris Bosh, who was forced into early retirement, while others, such as Brandon Ingram, have returned successfully after treatment.
For now, Lillard remains focused on his recovery, hoping to put this setback behind him and get back on the court when it is safe to do so.
