Daniel Akpeyi, 38, Rejects Retirement Talk and Receives Praise from South African Legend**

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, 38, has brushed off retirement talk, despite having fewer playing opportunities in recent months. The veteran keeper, who last played for South African club Marumo Gallants, has not featured since September after a tough game against Mamelodi Sundowns, where he conceded three goals before being substituted.

His lack of playing time has sparked rumours about his future, but Akpeyi recently posted a video on Instagram showing his best saves, including highlights from his time with the Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs. The video, titled ‘Joy is coming,’ caught the attention of South African legend Itumeleng Khune, who praised Akpeyi on social media.

Khune, Akpeyi’s former teammate, shared the video and wrote, “One of the best to grace our shores. Respect, Papa D.” Akpeyi responded, saying, “Skipper, you are simply the best. Big love.”

Akpeyi’s time at Marumo Gallants has not been ideal. He joined the club at the start of the season after they took over Moroka Swallows’ league status. He had some early appearances, but injuries and a dip in form have kept him sidelined since September. He has only made one appearance on the bench for Gallants, who are struggling defensively.

Reports suggest that Akpeyi is likely to leave Marumo Gallants soon, raising questions about his next move. Despite the challenges, Akpeyi remains hopeful, as shown in his recent Instagram video.

Akpeyi’s career includes 18 caps for Nigeria and a bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper. However, he has not played for Nigeria since the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs against Ghana.
