Daniel Akpeyi Begins Coaching Career in South Africa
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has officially begun a new chapter in his football journey after being appointed goalkeeper coach at Future of Africa, a newly promoted club in the Gauteng Development League (GDL) in South Africa.
The 39-year-old, who has been without a club since leaving Marumo Gallants at the end of last season, has now turned to coaching as he begins life after active football.
Akpeyi, who has earned his CAF D Coaching Licence, had earlier expressed his desire to move into coaching, and his latest appointment marks the start of that transition.
Known for his calmness, leadership, and experience between the posts, Akpeyi is expected to bring professionalism and guidance to the young Future of Africa side as they prepare for their first season in the GDL.
A product of the Nigeria Professional Football League, Akpeyi’s career began with Gabros International before he went on to play for Heartland FC. His move to South Africa in 2015 saw him play for Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, and later Moroka Swallows.
During his time with Kaizer Chiefs, he became a fan favourite, recording nine clean sheets in the 2019/2020 season and winning the Absa Premiership Player of the Month award for September and October.
On the international stage, Akpeyi represented Nigeria at various levels, including the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, the 2014 African Nations Championship, and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles won the bronze medal.
His new role as goalkeeper coach marks a natural step for one of Nigeria’s most consistent and respected goalkeepers, as he now aims to inspire and develop the next generation of talent.
