Daniel Amokachi makes Super Eagles return: The good, bad, prospects
The Nigeria Football Federation on Monday confirmed Daniel Amokachi will return to the Super Eagles as first assistant to Finidi George. This article x-rays the good, bad and prospects of this choice.
THE GOOD
Apart from the experience of playing for the Eagles in his active days, Daniel Amokachi had already served as assistant coach to Late Stephen Keshi.
During that time, Amokachi like the Late Stephen Keshi won the 2013 AFCON title, adding to their triumph as players. This noble achievement puts THE BULL in perfect stead for the Super Eagles assistant manager job.
Amokachi will command the respect of Super Eagles stars for his profile, having played the game to the highest level.
Aside his coaching interest, The Bull, as he was affectionately known during his playing days was amongst the star-studded line up of CAF commentators and analysts in Cote d’ivoire for the 2023 AFCON a sign he is well vested with information about the state of football in the continent.
THE BAD
Finidi George did not pick Daniel Amokachi as his assistant coach. THE BULL was a pick by the Nigeria Football Federation and so this could well affect their flow.
As former international teammates, Finidi George and Daniel Amokachi ccould potentially find the boss to assistant respect and space hard to keep, a situation identified and addressed by thier former teammate, Victor Ikpeba.
Ikpeba who is a member of the NFF technical committee warned Daniel Amokachi against any act of disrespect for his former teammate.
Ikpeba in his analysis on Monday night football also pointed to the “chaos that happened within the coaching crew three years ago” as something to learn from.
Ikpeba hinted that bringing in Emmanuel Amuneke to work with another ex-international Augustine Eguavoen did not work out well. He however advised Amokachi to accept Finidi George as the Super Eagles boss.
THE PROSPECTS
A Super Eagles coaching crew manned by two very distinguished former internationals will defintely carry high prospects. There is hope that Finidi George and the crew will lead Nigeria to 2026 World Cup qualification as a primary objective.
Both Finidi George and Danniel Amokachi were forwards and so there is high hopes that the Eagles will play attractive football and get positive results.
