Deborah Abiodun ‘absolutely thrilled’ to make CAF Young Player of the Year final shortlist

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun says she is ‘ absolutely thrilled’ to make the 2023 CAF Young Player of the year final shortlist.

As unveiled by CAF on Monday, November 27, Abiodun is among the five top nominees for young player category.

The US-based midfielder is joined by compatriot, Esther Ajakaye, Comfort Yeboah of Ghana, Morocco’s Nesryne El Chad and Thubelihle Shamase of South Africa.

“I am absolutely thrilled and humbled to make the final shortlist for the 2023 CAF Young Player of the Year (Women) award!“ Abiodun wrote on her X in reaction to the announcement.

“Grateful for this incredible recognition and amazing support. Thanks to everyone who has been part of this journey! #CAFAwards2023.”

2023 has been an incredible year for the youngster who made her FIFA Women’s World Cup debut vs Canada in Australia.

Despite being sent off in that match, Deborah had done just enough to impress Randy Waldrum who has since taken her to Pittsburb Panthers in the Atlantic Coast Conference of NCAA Division women’s college football.

Also on the final shortlist for the 2023 CAF awards from Nigeria are: Asisat Oshoala, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Randy Waldrum and the Super Falcons who made the final shortlists in other categories.

Winners for the various award categories will be announced at a ceremony in Morocco in December.
