Delta Queens to face Ghanaian side in WAFU B Champions League Qualifier final
NWFL champions Delta Queens defeated Ivorian side Athletico 3-2 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin to book their passage into the final of the WAFU B Zone Qualifier for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
The Delta Queens conceded a shock opener after only five minutes when Melissa Behinan found the back of the net for Athletico. The Nigerian side huffed and puffed but failed to find an equaliser until the 63rd minute, when Mercy Omokwo scored to level the game. Neither side managed to score a winner and the semifinal match went into extra-time.
Omokwo came up clutch again to turn the tie on its head as she scored only eight minutes into the extra period to give the Nigerian champions the lead for the first time, before Falconets midfielder and team captain Taiwo Afolabi scored in the first minute of the second period of extra time to effectively put the match beyond the reach of the Ivorians. Joy Sunday scored a consolation goal in the 114th minute as Delta Queens held on for a 3-2 win.
The Nigerian champions will face Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the final for a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League as the representative of WAFU Zone B.
