Diamond League: Chukwuebuka Enekwechi solidifies status as Nigeria’s standout athlete of 2024
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has solidified his status as Nigeria’s standout athlete of 2024, capping off an exceptional season with a commendable performance at the Brussels Diamond League.
Enekwechi became the first Nigerian thrower to qualify for a Diamond League final, where he achieved a distance of 21.29m to secure fifth place in the men’s Shot Put event.
This performance marked the 21st time in 2024 that Enekwechi had surpassed the 21.00m mark, further cementing his dominance in African athletics.
Enekwechi’s 2024 season is undoubtedly the best of his career, highlighted by several key achievements, including setting a new African indoor record of 21.63m and breaking his own Nigerian record with a throw of 21.91m at the Prefontaine Classic in May.
He also reached the finals of the World Indoor Championships, African Games, Paris Olympic Games, and Diamond League, consistently finishing among the top competitors.
Beyond these accomplishments, Enekwechi claimed two continental gold medals, establishing himself as Africa’s best shot putter and placing him among the top seven in the world.
His impressive 2024 season makes him the undisputed Nigerian Athlete of the Year, an accolade well-deserved for his remarkable consistency and historic performances on the global stage.
