Disappointment for Tobi Amusan as she misses out on 100m hurdles podium
World record holder records slowest time of the year in final
World record holder Tobi Amusan endured a disappointing performance in the final of the 100m hurdles event in the 2023 World Championship in Budapest, finishing in sixth place in the event.
Amusan won both her Heat and semifinals visibly below her best performance after her off-the-track issues, and was aiming to become only the fourth woman in history to claim at least two gold medals in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Championship.
She was up against her regular rivals in the final, including Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and former world record holder Kendra Harrison.
Like in the previous rounds, Amusan had a very slow start and spent the entire race chasing after the rest of the field, finishing in a time of 12.62s to place sixth in the event. 2015 world champion Danielle Williams from Jamaica won the event in 12.43s, with Camacho-Quinn claiming silver with 12.44s and Harrison winning the bronze with a time of 12.46s.
Amusan finished behind Devynne Charlton and Ackera Nugent, as well, in the race. The world record holder will now turn her attention to the women’s 4x100m event, where she is due to participate as part of the Nigerian quartet.
