‘Don’t compare Iwobi to Okocha’ – Etim Esin criticises lack of creativity in Super Eagles midfield
Former Super Eagles midfielder Etim Esin has expressed concerns about the team’s lack of creativity, stating that Alex Iwobi is not the solution to the problem.
The Super Eagles recently struggled to create scoring opportunities during their AFCON 2025 qualifying matches, raising doubts about their chances in the tournament despite securing qualification. Their lacklustre performance included a surprise defeat to Rwanda, ending their unbeaten run in the group stage.
Speaking to Complete Sports, Etim highlighted the absence of a true playmaker in the team. “The team lacks a proper number 10 — someone who can control the game, provide key assists, and disrupt the opposition. We no longer have players with the magic touch like Jay-Jay Okocha, Henry Nwosu, or even myself,” he said.
Etim dismissed comparisons between Iwobi and former Nigerian greats, saying, “People talk about Iwobi, but he doesn’t come close to what Okocha could do. That comparison doesn’t make sense.”
Iwobi has been a consistent presence in the Super Eagles midfield, but Etim believes the Fulham star is not suited to the role of a creative playmaker. The team’s lack of inventiveness, according to Etim, is a major reason behind their recent struggles.
