DR Congo hero vs Egypt, Mpasi eyes another continental triumph in Cote d’Ivoire

D.R Congo hero in the penalty shoot-out win over Egypt, goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi is hoping his country will repeat their success in the 2009 CHAN tournament again in Côte d’Ivoire in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 by winning it.

Mpasi scored the winning penalty to help D.R Congo knockout Egypt from the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’lvoire 2023 in the round of 16 stage.

After the heroics vs Egypt, the goalkeeper is already comparing their run to their CHAN success in Côte d’Ivoire 15 years ago.

Lionel Mpasi won the man of the match award vs Egypt

Mpasi said after the round of 16 win “We’re already going to rest well and then we’ll take it match after match. All this without forgetting that DR Congo won a continental title in Côte d’Ivoire (CHAN in 2009). “Maybe that’s a sign,” he said.

The goalkeeper also explained how he prevented Egypt goalkeeper Gabaski from scoring his penalty and the technique behind his winning penalty.

“I tried to stay calm. I tried to distract Gabaski from his shot and I succeeded. After that, I concentrated on getting my technique right,” said the Congo DR keeper.

Mpasi said he had remembered his missed shot in training and tried to do better.

“Before my shot, I thought about how I had missed in training, but tonight it worked,” he said.
