Drama in Zagreb as Orsic treble condemns Tottenham to the ignominy of Europa League exit
Dinamo Zagreb hosted Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of their Europa League Round of 16 encounter having lost the first leg 2-0. It was almost mission impossible to come back and qualify, especially after their manager was sent to prison for fraud before the game.
Tottenham Hotspur played to keep their opponents at bay in the first half, restricting them to mainly half chances as they looked for a controlled performance to send them through. The first sign of trouble came after 62 minutes when Dinamo winger, Mislav Orsic was allowed to cut in from the left and curl a right footed effort into the top corner of the net to give his side the lead. Orsic made it 2 to his side after 82 minutes, hitting yet another fine strike beyond Spurs keeper, Hugo Lloris to send the game to extra time. Orsic struck once more from outside the box in the first minute of the second half of extra time to spark delirious celebrations from the home side, effectively burying Tottenham’s hopes of reaching the last 8 of the competition.
Jose Mourinho expressed his disappointment in his players’ performance, and Hugo Lloris referred to the result as a disgrace as Tottenham were sent crashing out of the Europa League by a team whose manager is imprisoned. Tottenham’s last chance of silverware is in the Carabao Cup, where they face Manchester City in the final.
