Dumfries named Player of the Match as Netherlands end the American dream
Denzel Dumfries has been named the Player of the Match as the Netherlands beat USA in the first second round game at the 2022 World Cup to end the American dream.
The Americans were one of the best defensive teams going into the last 16 having conceded just one goal in three Group games.
They headed into the game against Netherlands full of confidence and dreams having played all Group stage games without a defeat.
But their hopes were dashed by Denzel Dumfries and the Dutch who won 3-1 at the Khalifa International Stadium to book a place in the quarterfinal.
Christian Pulisic, was gifted an early chance to put the USA up but his effort talisman failed to beat Andries Noppert in goal for the Dutch.
After a 20-pass sequence, Denzel Dumfries teed up Memphis Depay who scored the first goal of the game in the 10th minute of the encounter.
The Inter Milan defender was involved yet again as the Netherlands increased their lead to two in the added minutes of the first half.
Dumfries cut back to Blind in a similar version to the first goal gifted the former Manchester United defender Dutch’s second goal.
Christian Pulisic was involved as Hagi Wright pulled one back for USA in the 76th minute of the game.
Denzel Dumfries who assisted the first two goals then scored Oranj’s third goal following an assist from Daley Blind nine minutes from time, killing off the USA’s comeback hopes.
The Netherlands will play either Argentina or Australia at Lusail Stadium on Friday in the quarter-final.
And for his effort, contributing all three goals with two assists and one goal, Denzel Dumfries was named the man of the match.
