Dutch star dissapointed over Lionel Messi’s ‘ disrespectful ‘ post match reaction
Apart from scoring twice to force extra-time, Dutch forward Wout Werghoust was left dissapointed over the eventual result and Lionel Messi’s post match reaction.
WHAT HAPPENED
A tensed encounter it was. One that had 16 cards shared amongst both teams as they battled for a place in the last-4 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Argentina had a 2-0 advantage courtesy of a strike by Molina and a Lionel Messi penalty until Netherlands substitute Wout Werghoust bagged a brace in the final minutes to level scores at 2-2 and force extra-time.
The Argentines still truimphed 4-3 on penalties but there was so much bad blood created during the course of the game, Argentine skipper Lionel Messi particularly caught in the web of the exchanges.
According to Burnley forward Wout Werghoust, his attempt to exchange post match pleasantries with Lionel Messi produced a ‘ disrespectful ‘ response from the PSG man who also had hot comments for Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal.
WHAT WOUT WERGHOUST SAID
“I wanted to give him a hand after the match but he smashed my hand away and didn’t want to speak with me.”
“My Spanish is not good, but they were not respectful words. So it was really disappointing.”
Not just Werghoust, even Louis Van Gaal was not spared from Messi’s post match wrath, the forward particularly unhappy with what he described as disrespectful and taunting comments by the opposition.
WHAT NEXT
Wout Werghoust and his Dutch teammates will head home dissapointed as expected of a team that fought so hard for 120 minutes.
Skipper Virgil Van Dirk and Stephen Berghuis were denied from six yards by Argentine shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez as Netherlands bowed 3-4 to Argentina on penalties.
For Lionel Messi and Argentina, they face Croatia in the Semi-final on December 13.
