Super Eagles in full flight; a January transfer recap for Nigeria’s stars
Quite a number of Nigerian stars completed transfers during the January transfer window in Europe, with both Super Eagles regulars and hopefuls making up the list.
Teenage sensation Akinkunmi Amoo left Swedish outfit Hammarby IF for Danish SuperLigaen side FC Copenhagen. The 19-year-old joined on a four-year deal, and his transfer was worth €4.5 million, a record fee received for selling a player by Hammarby IF.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye officially became a Watford FC player on January 1st, having completed a move from Dutch Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam. The goalkeeper remains on loan at the Dutch outfit until the end of the season.
One-cap Super Eagles midfielder Innocent Bonke secured a move from Sweden, just like Amoo. The midfielder moved from Malmo FF to FC Lorient in the French Ligue 1, where he will team up with fellow Super Eagles star Terence Moffi.
Samuel Kalu was left out of the Super Eagles squad to AFCON 2021, but that did not deter him from completing a switch from Girondins de Bordeaux to English Premier League outfit Watford. The 24-year-old moved in a deal worth an initial €500,000.
Former FC Porto midfielder Mikel Agu moved on a free transfer from Portuguese outfit Vitoria de Guimaraes to CF Fuenlabrada in the lower rungs of Spanish football.
John Ogu finally ended his time in the wilderness as he secured a move back into the game. The AFCON 2019 bronze medallist joined Israeli side Hapoel Nof Hagalil after about 16 months without a club. The midfielder has won the Israeli league with Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the past.
Former Dream Team captain Azubuike Okechukwu moved from Istanbul Basaksehir to Yeni Malatyaspor, both in Turkey.
One-cap Super Eagles striker Josh Maja completed a loan move from French Ligue 1 side Girondins de Bordeaux to Championship side Stoke City. The former Sunderland striker played for Fulham on loan last season.
Midfielder Adamu Alhassan moved from Menemenspor to Ankara Keciorengucu, where Super Eagles B star Ibrahim Olawoyin has enjoyed a dazzling campaign so far.
Striker Fortune Bassey moved from Czech side SK Dynamo Ceske Budejovice to Hungarian giants Ferencvaros. The transfer cost the Hungarian side around €1.5 million.
