Ebuehi Delighted After Return From Injury in Empoli’s Draw with Cagliari
Nigeria international Tyronne Ebuehi has shared his happiness after making a return to football nearly 13 months after a serious knee injury kept him out of action.
The Empoli right-back came off the bench in the 65th minute during Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Cagliari, making his first appearance of the 2024–25 Serie A season.
The match was played at the Stadio Carlo Castellani, where the 29-year-old replaced Junior Sambia as Empoli continued their fight to stay in the top division.
Ebuehi had not played since picking up a cruciate ligament injury in a match against Bologna on March 16, 2024. The injury ruled him out for the rest of that season.
Ebuehi Speaks After Comeback
Speaking to Italian outlet TMW after the match, Ebuehi said:
“I’m happy to be back on the field. I feel ready and determined to help the team stay in the league. I want to do my part in this final part of the season.”
Despite Ebuehi’s return, Empoli are still in the relegation zone, sitting 18th in the Serie A table with 24 points from 31 games — two points behind safety with seven matches left to play.
Looking ahead, Ebuehi said:
“We’re two points behind, but there are still games to play and chances to take. We have to give everything until the end.
It was the second serious injury of my career. I was out for a year, and it was very tough. There were difficult times, but now I’m just happy to be back.”
A Boost for Empoli’s Survival Hopes
Empoli’s next match is away against Napoli on April 14, as they continue their battle to avoid relegation.
Ebuehi played 15 league games last season, providing one assist. He joined Empoli in July 2022 after playing for Benfica B and Venezia. He made his Serie A debut with Venezia in August 2021 and later made his first Empoli appearance in August 2022 against Lecce.
So far in his Serie A career, the Nigerian defender has made 61 appearances, scored two goals, and provided five assists — receiving only one red card.
Now back in action, Empoli hope Ebuehi’s experience and calm presence can help steady the defence and give them a strong finish to the season.
