Edo Queens stage incredible comeback win over Mamelodi Sundowns to reach CAF Women’s Champions League semi-final

Nigeria Women’s Premier League champions, Edo Queens, delivered a sensational comeback on Saturday night, defeating reigning African champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their final Group B match at the CAF Women’s Champions League in Casablanca, Morocco. The victory secured their place in the tournament’s semifinals as Group B leaders.

Edo Queens will face Tanzania’s TP Mazembe in a highly anticipated semifinal clash on Tuesday.

The game seemed all but lost for the Nigerian side as Mamelodi Sundowns held a 1-0 lead deep into stoppage time, courtesy of M. Kgatiete’s 24th-minute strike. However, Edo Queens produced a remarkable late rally. Emem Essien equalised in the 95th minute, and just five minutes later, Mary Mamudu sealed the dramatic victory with a stunning goal, eliminating the defending champions.

Edo Queens began their campaign with an emphatic 3-0 win over Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, with goals from Emem Essien, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Goodness Osigwe. In their second group match, they settled for a goalless draw against Egypt’s Masar FC before delivering their extraordinary performance against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The thrilling comeback not only showcased Edo Queens’ resilience but also marked them as strong contenders for the championship.
