Edo State Governor rewards Edo Queens FC with ₦100 Million for WAFU-B victory
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has rewarded Edo Queens Football Club with a sum of ₦100 million for their recent triumph in the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifiers held in Côte d’Ivoire.
The announcement was made during a Red Carpet reception at the Government House in Benin City, where the team was honored for their outstanding achievement.
Governor Obaseki expressed his joy at the team’s success, highlighting the significance of their victory for the people of Edo State. “This is a season of joy for the good people of Edo State. We are in a celebration mood, as we are marking the 33 years of Edo State as one united people,” he said. “Today, Edo Queens is here to add to our happiness. I don’t know what to say other than to thank God for the positive results we have been achieving since we came on board.”
Reflecting on the team’s journey, Governor Obaseki noted the transformation of Edo Queens since his administration took office in 2016. “When we came in 2016, nobody gave Edo women a chance. All we heard were negative stories about our girls. But I told myself that we were going to change the narrative, and today, I am happy with the positive results we are getting in all sectors of our economy,” he remarked.
The governor also encouraged the team to continue their winning streak on the continental stage. “This is not a speech-making event. I have come here to say a big thank you to everyone who made this mission possible,” he stated. “I want you all to go and conquer Africa as you have conquered West Africa. If you bring the CAF Champions League trophy to Edo State, I won’t tell you what I will do for you, but for doing this, I give the entire team, supporting staff, and supporters club one hundred million naira.”
