Effiong strike sinks Kano Pillars in NPFL

Akwa United secure second win of the season

‏Akwa United hosted Kano Pillars with both sides heading into the game on different levels. Akwa United were winless in three games while Pillars had won twice in that same period in the NPFL. Akwa United came out on top in the encounter 1-0 thanks to a first half strike.

The game started at the Nest of Champions in Uyo with both sides warily testing each other. Akwa United were boosted by the return of stalwart, Olisa Ndah from injury, while Kano Pillars were missing Abbas Rabiu as he was suspended. Akwa United were the first to really test the goalkeeper, calling Kano Pillars goalkeeper Idris Ibrahim into a fine point blank save. Shortly afterwards, the home side took the lead when Akpan Etboy’s cross was expertly headed in by Ndifreke Effiong in the 29th minute. It was Effiong’s 4th goal of the NPFL season for Akwa United.

Akwa United picked up their first win in 4 matches, taking them up to 9 points in 11th place, 2 points behind Kano Pillars in 6th on the NPFL table.
