Eguavoen admits he is unsure Onazi can still play at a top-level
Super Eagles technical director and interim head coach as admitted he is unsure if his newly invited player Ogenyi Onazi can still play at a top level.
Ogenyi Onazi who has not played for Nigeria in more than three years currently plays outside the top 50 competitive leagues in the world.
The 29-year-old midfielder plays with Al-Adalah in Saudi Arabia’s second division but that didn’t stop the coach from calling him.
Although Austin Eguavoen admitted he included him in the standby list only to ‘pacify’ certain people, he also said he wasn’t sure he can top-level football.
“Onazi, good player. Whether he’s still good and can play at that level, we don’t know,” said Eguavoen.
“But that’s why I said to pacify everybody, to ensure there’s harmony here, put him on the standby.
“While he’s on the standby, I have the final say”, he said.
The 32-man list which included Ogenyi Onazi will be reduced to 24 as Nigeria tackle Ghana over two-leg for a place in 2022 Qatar World Cup.
