Eguavoen Explains Why the Next Super Eagles Coach Should Be Nigerian
Augustine Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has strongly recommended hiring a Nigerian coach to lead the Super Eagles.
Eguavoen believes that a local coach would be the best choice because they understand the unique challenges of Nigerian football and can connect better with the passionate fans.
The Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since Finidi George resigned after disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Eguavoen stepped in and helped Nigeria qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers set to resume in March, Eguavoen has emphasized the need for a new coach to be appointed quickly. He said, “March is just around the corner. We need to act fast to get the coach settled, plan ahead, and get ready for the qualifiers.”
While the NFF has reportedly spoken to foreign coaches, Eguavoen remains firm that a Nigerian coach is the right choice. He said, “We should stick with a local coach because we understand the situation and know the people.”
The Super Eagles are currently fifth in their World Cup qualifying group with three points from four matches. They will play against group leaders Rwanda in Kigali before hosting Zimbabwe at home.
