Eguavoen focused solely on victory ahead of Rwanda clash

Super Eagles interim boss Augustine Eguavoen has made his intentions clear as Nigeria prepares for their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda.

Speaking to the media in Kigali, where the team has landed ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, Eguavoen emphasised that his priority is securing the three points rather than adopting a complex tactical plan.

“There is no game plan. The plan is the three points,” Eguavoen stated firmly, as shared by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on their official social media accounts.

Eguavoen’s pragmatic and straightforward approach sets the tone for Nigeria’s qualification journey, and his comments underline his determination to keep things simple, focusing on the result over strategy. This outlook is seen as a refreshing change from the often overly cautious approach that has hindered the Super Eagles in the past.

Building on the Benin Victory

The Super Eagles head into the game against Rwanda off the back of a commanding 3-0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo last Saturday. It was Eguavoen’s first match back in charge, and the team responded well to his leadership, ending a three-match winless streak.

In that match, Nigeria’s stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman shone brightly. Lookman netted a brace, while Osimhen added a stunning goal, further boosting morale in the camp.

Looking Ahead to Rwanda

As Nigeria prepares to face the Amavubi of Rwanda, Eguavoen’s no-nonsense focus on victory has already resonated with fans and pundits. With key players like William Troost-Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, and the in-form Osimhen and Lookman in the squad, expectations are high for another strong performance.

Eguavoen’s direct approach may be just what the Super Eagles need as they aim to secure two wins from two in their AFCON 2025 qualification campaign. Nigerian football fans are eager to see if this mentality can bring another successful result on Tuesday in Kigali.
