Eguavoen lists reasons why NFF should name permanent Super Eagles coach
Interim Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has emphasised the need for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to quickly appoint a permanent coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Eguavoen, who has been leading the team since the last Africa Cup of Nations, guided the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. However, with World Cup qualifiers set to begin in March 2025, he believes it is urgent for the NFF to resolve the uncertainty around the team’s leadership.
“March is just around the corner,” Eguavoen told Kennis FM. “If we have to do something (about the team), we need to do it quick. The earlier a substantive coach is found, the better.”
While Eguavoen remains open to continuing as head coach, he admitted he is unsure about taking on the role permanently. “If I am called upon to manage the Super Eagles for the 2026 WCQ, I don’t know what I will say,” he stated.
The Super Eagles are under pressure to improve their form, having gone four matches without a win. They currently trail Rwanda, Benin, and South Africa in their World Cup qualifying group, adding urgency to the NFF’s decision.
Eguavoen stressed that whoever is appointed must settle quickly and collaborate with the team to prepare effectively for the qualifiers. “We need to speak, tweak things, exchange ideas, and talk about the way forward,” he added.
The NFF is yet to announce a permanent decision on the team’s coaching situation.
