Eguavoen reacts to latest Super Eagles appointment

Augustine Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has agreed to take charge of the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Eguavoen’s appointment marks the fourth time he has stepped into the role of Super Eagles head coach, a responsibility he has embraced with a sense of duty and patriotism.

The decision to reappoint Eguavoen comes after the NFF’s initial plan to hire German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through, as the former Wolfsburg boss declined the offer. Despite the setback, Eguavoen has expressed his readiness to lead the national team once again, citing his deep connection to both the country and the sport.

“I will do it for the love of the country and the game,” Eguavoen told Mastersports. “Remember, football gave me name and fame, and the country gave me the opportunity, so it’s difficult to say no at this point because of the circumstances we find ourselves in.”

Eguavoen, who has been in and out of the NFF’s employ since 2006, is no stranger to the pressures and expectations that come with managing Nigeria’s national team. His latest stint will see him leading the Super Eagles as they host the Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on September 7, before traveling to Rwanda for their second qualifier on September 10.

The Super Eagles will be counting on Eguavoen’s experience and tactical acumen as they seek to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON tournament. With his passion for the game and dedication to the national cause, Eguavoen is determined to guide the team to success in these crucial qualifying matches.
