Eguavoen receives boost as Moses Simon returns for AFCON qualifiers
Super Eagles interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has received a timely boost ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The Super Eagles are set to face the Republic of Benin and Rwanda this month as they look to secure their spot in the tournament, to be held in Morocco.
Currently leading Group D with 10 points from four games, the Super Eagles have been impacted by injuries to key players. However, the return of winger Moses Simon, who has recovered from a knee injury, is expected to bolster the squad. Simon, a crucial player for both Nigeria and his French club Nantes, missed Nantes’ recent 3-1 defeat to Strasbourg due to the injury.
Simon is now back to full fitness and is expected to play against Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday. His return is also a relief for Eguavoen, as Simon’s experience and skill will be vital in Nigeria’s matches against Rwanda and Benin.
The 29-year-old has been in good form this season, with eight Ligue 1 appearances, two goals, and three assists. Recently, he made history at Nantes by breaking the late Emiliano Sala’s record of 29 assists, setting a new club record since their return to Ligue 1 in 2013. Simon’s recovery is timely as Nigeria aims to strengthen its position at the top of Group D and secure AFCON qualification.
