Eguavoen Super Eagles Interim coach appointment news described as a ‘joke’ by NFF source
A source privy to happenings at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has described reports suggesting Austin Eguavoen has been appointed as interim head coach of the Nigerian national football team as a ‘joke’.
Austin Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles right-back who has been serving as the team’s Technical Director since 2020, was rumored to step in as interim coach following the departure of Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, whose contract expired at the end of February.
Peseiro guided the Super Eagles to a commendable second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast.
However, according to The Nation Online, a source within the NFF dismissed these reports as unfounded, labeling them as a ‘joke taken too far.’
The source is quoted to have said: ‘There’s nothing for Eguavoen as far as I know… Nobody has mentioned Eguavoen as Super Eagles’ interim manager.’
The denial comes amid speculation regarding potential candidates to fill the vacant coaching position. Names such as Finidi George, coach of Enyimba and Peseiro’s assistant, Emmanuel Amuneke, FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning coach in 2015, and Samson Siasia have been linked with the role.
As of now, the NFF has yet to issue an official statement regarding the appointment of a new head coach for the Super Eagles, leaving fans and observers eagerly awaiting news of who will lead the team moving forward.
