Egypt Edge Super Eagles 2–1 in Cairo Friendly Ahead of AFCON 2025

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat to Egypt on Tuesday evening in an international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium.

Egypt took the lead in the first half through Mahmoud Saber, but Nigeria responded well and drew level before the break. Chidozie Awaziem reacted quickly to score from close range after Zaidu Sanusi’s free-kick hit the post.

Despite limited time together in training, the Super Eagles started the match confidently and enjoyed good spells of possession. Head coach Eric Chelle set his team up in a 4-4-2 diamond, with Stanley Nwabali in goal and Paul Onuachu leading the attack alongside Chidera Ejuke. Midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro made his Super Eagles debut.

Nigeria controlled much of the first half, but Egypt found success down the left side. In the 27th minute, Zizo got to the byline and pulled the ball back for Saber to tap home.

After the interval, Chelle made several changes, and Nigeria struggled to maintain their rhythm. Egypt regained the lead in the 52nd minute when Mostafa Mohamed scored from close range, despite Nigerian protests for offside.

The Super Eagles pushed for an equaliser, with chances falling to Onuachu, Cyriel Dessers and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Ademola Lookman added energy in attack, while Nigeria remained dangerous from set pieces, but Egypt defended well to hold on.

The result ended Egypt’s nine-year wait for a win over Nigeria.

Nigeria will stay in Cairo until Thursday before travelling to Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles will open their campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23.
