Ekiti Queens in Trouble After Fans Attack Match Officials

Match officials who oversaw the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Matchday 3 game between Ekiti Queens and Edo Queens went through a frightening experience after the home team lost 1–0 in Ado-Ekiti.

Edo Queens’ forward Atume Doosuur scored the only goal of the match with a well-placed header in the 65th minute, leaving the Ekiti Queens goalkeeper with no chance.

However, the situation turned violent after the final whistle. Some Ekiti Queens supporters ran onto the pitch and began throwing stones and empty water bottles at the match officials. Security officers intervened quickly and managed to guide the officials away from danger.

Videos shared online show angry fans breaking through security barriers, chasing the officials across the pitch and hitting them with different objects while police and stewards tried to calm the situation.

Fan violence continues to be a major problem in Nigeria’s domestic football, damaging efforts to improve the sport’s reputation, protect everyone involved, and attract proper investment.

Although Ekiti Queens lost narrowly on the field, the violent scenes afterwards have caused far more concern. The NWFL is expected to take strong action, and its response will show how serious it is about dealing with crowd trouble and enforcing discipline in the women’s league.
