Ekong unveiled at Salernitana, promises to help club in survival battle
Super Eagles assistant captain William Troost-Ekong has been unveiled at Salernitana after completing a loan switch from Watford FC.
Italian Serie A side Salernitana on Tuesday January 24, 2023 announced the loan transfer of 28-years old Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong from English Championship side Watford FC.
” US Salernitana 1919 communicates that it has reached an agreement with Watford FC for the temporary transfer with the right to buy the defender born in ’93 William Troost-Ekong,” the club announced via a statement on their official website on Tuesday.
The announcement was accompanied with unveiling pictures showing Ekong will wear jersey number 15 for the Garnets.
Salernitana are currently placed 16th on the Italian Serie A standings after 19 games and will at least push to retain top-flight status at the end of the season.
Managed by 49-year old Davide Nicola, Salernitana have already brought in experienced goalkepeer Guillermo Ochoa but that hasn’t fully solved their defensive woes as they look to avoid a slip into the drop zone.
Salernitana have conceded 13 goals in the last four games a concern which led to the move for the Nigerian defender.
In his first words as a Salernitana player, Ekong said he was happy to join Salernitana and help with the clubs push for salvation.
Speaking in Italian language a sign he was arriving at a familiar territory having previously played in the Serie A with Udinese, Ekong said;
“Contento di essere arrivato alla Salernitana. Voglio aiutare a conquistare la salvezza” .
Ekong could make his Salernitana debut vs Lecce on Friday January 27 in an Italian Serie A Matchday 20 clash.
