England defeated Nigeria on penalties to reach the quarter-final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last-16 clash on Monday August 7.

A gruelling 90 minutes of football at the Lang Park in Brisbane, Australia failed to produce any goal in what was a keenly contested game.

England star, Lauren James endured a frustrating outing as Nigeria right-back Michelle Alozie effectively kept her at bay until the mood spilled.

James stepped on Alozie’s back and was duely sent off to leave the Lionesses playing 11 regulation time plus 30 extra-time minutes with 10-players.

Buoyed by the advantage, Nigeria dominated the extra-time with England sitting back deep to deny the Super Falcons a win.

At the expiration of 120-minutes of football, the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last-16 clash between England and Nigeria remained 0-0 so the game went through to penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.
