Enugu Government Sets Aside N10 Billion for Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Renovation
The Enugu State government has announced that it will spend N10 billion to renovate the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
Lloyd Ekweremmadu, the state commissioner for youth and sports development, made the announcement during the first meeting of the ministry for 2025 on Friday in Enugu.
“The Enugu State government has allocated N10 billion for the renovation of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium as part of the 2025 budget,” Ekweremmadu said.
He added that Governor Peter Mbah is committed to improving sports in the state, especially at the grassroots level.
In addition to the stadium renovation, N3 billion has been set aside for the Awgu Games Village, and N200 million will be used to upgrade the Enugu Sports Council secretariat.
Plans are also in place to build an Olympic-size swimming pool inside the stadium, and the indoor hall will be repaired. These upgrades are aimed at helping Enugu host the 26th National Sports Festival in 2026.
This year, the ministry will focus on preparing for the 2025 Coal-City International Marathon, with plans to partner with a consultant to organize the event. The marathon will feature international athletes from around the world.
Ekweremmadu also highlighted achievements from 2024, including hosting the first National Council on Sports Summit, and the victory of Rangers International Football Club in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season. Other events hosted in the state included the first Mixed Martial Arts Caged fight, the South-East Boxing Championship, the National Under-15 NPFL Youth Football Competition, and the Coal City Half Marathon.
He also mentioned that the ministry exceeded its revenue target for 2024 by 300%, generating N20 million, just N4 million short of its N24 million target.
Ekweremmadu praised the staff for their hard work and encouraged them to continue striving for success in 2025.
