Enyimba Appoint Uche Okechukwu as New Sporting Director

Enyimba have confirmed the appointment of former Super Eagles defender Uche Okechukwu as the club’s new sporting director.

The Aba-based club has handed the key leadership role to one of the most respected figures in Nigerian football following the resignation of the previous sporting director.

Okechukwu, popularly known as “the Gentle Giant”, was officially appointed in a letter signed by Enyimba chairman, Nwankwo Kanu. The former Nigeria captain praised Okechukwu’s experience, character and deep understanding of the game.

Kanu said the club believes Okechukwu’s background as an elite player and his knowledge of football structures will play an important role in Enyimba’s long-term plans. He added that the new sporting director is expected to help improve standards, guide recruitment and strengthen player development as the club targets success both in Nigeria and in Africa.

Okechukwu is widely respected for his calm leadership and professionalism during an outstanding playing career.

Born in Lagos, he began his career in the Nigerian league with Flash Flamingoes and Iwuanyanwu Nationale, winning league titles in 1988 and 1989. His performances earned him a move to Europe in 1990, when he joined Danish side Brøndby.

At Brøndby, Okechukwu became a regular starter, winning two league titles and helping the club reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1990–91 season. He was later named Brøndby’s Player of the Year in 1992.

In 1993, he moved to Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, where he won two league titles and formed a strong defensive partnership. He later returned to Nigeria, playing for Ocean Boys and Bayelsa United before retiring.

At international level, Okechukwu was a key member of Nigeria’s golden generation. He won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994, played at two FIFA World Cups and was part of the historic Olympic team that won gold at the Atlanta 1996 Games, captained by Kanu.

Now back at Enyimba in an off-field role, the club’s management and fans are hopeful that Okechukwu’s experience and leadership will help drive a new era of progress.

Enyimba last won the CAF Champions League in 2004 and lifted the Nigeria Premier Football League title in 2023.
