Enzo Fernandez Says Argentina Represented Nation with Pride After World Cup Final Defeat
Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez has said his team represented their country “in the best possible way” despite losing the 2026 FIFA World Cup final to Spain.
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in New Jersey on Sunday to win the world title.
Fernandez was sent off late in normal time after receiving a second yellow card. His first booking came for protesting to Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, while the second followed a late challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.
In a message posted on social media after the match, the Chelsea midfielder did not mention his red card. Instead, he praised the fighting spirit of the Argentina squad.
“As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result,” Fernandez wrote.
“For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up.
“It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility and commitment.”
The final ended with ugly scenes as several Argentina players and members of the coaching staff clashed with Spain players during their celebrations.
FIFA has opened an investigation into the incidents. Players, coaches and the Argentine Football Association could face disciplinary action if they are found guilty of misconduct.
Before the match, unverified footage on social media appeared to show Argentina captain Lionel Messi telling his teammates to stay calm and focus only on the game.
“Let’s just concentrate on playing, nothing else,” Messi was heard saying in the video.
The behaviour of some Argentina players after the final has been criticised by several former footballers, who said teams should show respect and accept defeat with dignity.
