Enzo Maresca Previews Chelsea’s Clash with Everton

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has spoken ahead of the Blues’ match against Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime, as they aim to build on their dramatic win over Fulham and secure another three points in the race for a top-five finish.

Maresca confirmed that Malo Gusto, who was forced off with a muscle injury during the Fulham game, will miss the upcoming clash with Everton. The French right-back had replaced Reece James at half-time but is now working on his recovery outside. However, Maresca is hopeful Gusto’s injury isn’t serious and expects him back soon.

“Malo is injured, but it doesn’t look like a serious injury,” Maresca said. “He is running and doing some work outside, but he won’t be available for tomorrow’s game.”

The Chelsea boss also provided updates on other players. “Marc Guiu is still out, and Aaron Anselmino is also unavailable. But the rest of the squad is fit. Marc is progressing well and could be back in one or two weeks.”

Maresca also spoke about Romeo Lavia, who is back in the squad after an injury layoff. The midfielder was on the bench for recent games and is expected to play a part in the upcoming matches. “Romeo is doing well, and he’s been training with us,” Maresca explained. “We are being careful with him, just like we have been with Reece James. We’ll take it step by step to ensure he’s fully fit for the final part of the season.”

Chelsea’s win over Fulham kept them in the race for Champions League qualification, with victory over Everton lifting them into the top four. The Blues have an excellent record against the Toffees at home, unbeaten in their last 29 top-flight encounters at Stamford Bridge, a club record.

However, Everton managed a 0-0 draw in the previous meeting at Goodison Park, and Maresca knows the Merseysiders have improved under manager David Moyes, now sitting 13th in the table.

Reflecting on his 50th game in charge of Chelsea, Maresca said, “It’s been a good experience, and I’m very happy. I’ve learned a lot here. Playing in many competitions and having games every few days is a learning process. We’ve had good moments and some bad ones, but the club has a vision, and we are just at the beginning of it.”
