Eric Chelle gets Sunday Oliseh’s backing despite World Cup qualification setback

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, has spoken highly of national team head coach Eric Chelle, even after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Chelle’s side exited the qualification race following a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the final playoff round. The defeat was his first since taking charge, and it sparked strong criticism from many fans and analysts.
Oliseh, however, has chosen to stand behind the coach. Speaking on his podcast, he admitted that he was unsure about Chelle’s appointment at the beginning, but said he has now been impressed by his work and progress with the team.
He noted that Chelle has shown commitment, improved the squad, and collected valuable points during his time in charge, more than those who coached the team before him.
Chelle will now focus on preparing the Super Eagles for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off in December.
