Eric Chelle Plays Down AFCON Expectations Ahead of Nigeria vs Algeria Clash

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has played down growing expectations around the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations campaign, insisting his team must remain focused on the immediate challenge ahead.

Nigeria will face Algeria in Saturday’s AFCON quarter-final at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, with the Super Eagles widely regarded as one of the favourites after an impressive run in the tournament.

The three-time African champions have scored 12 goals and conceded just four so far, underlining their strong form. However, Chelle refused to look beyond the quarter-final when asked about Nigeria’s chances of lifting the trophy in Morocco.

The coach stressed that his focus is solely on preparation for the clash in Marrakech, highlighting the importance of training sessions and match readiness rather than long-term ambitions.

Nigeria are chasing their first AFCON title since 2013, having finished runners-up two years ago. Their meeting with Algeria brings together two of Africa’s most successful football nations in one of the standout matches of the quarter-final stage.

Both teams arrive in Marrakech after relocating from their previous tournament bases, with Nigeria moving from Fès and Algeria from Rabat.

The Super Eagles have been ruthless in attack, led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. Both players have scored three goals each in the tournament, with Lookman also providing four assists. Akor Adams has also boosted Nigeria’s attacking options after scoring his first AFCON goal against Mozambique.

Algeria, however, pose a serious threat. Baghdad Bounedjah remains a key danger, while captain Riyad Mahrez continues to lead the Fennecs with experience and creativity. Midfielder Ismael Bennacer adds control, and defender Ramy Bensebaini has previously troubled Nigeria.

Nigeria’s strength has also come from midfield leaders Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi, who have helped maintain balance between defensive discipline and attacking flair throughout the competition.

Saturday’s quarter-final is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter, with the winner set to face either Cameroon or hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.

For now, Chelle and his players remain focused on the task at hand, determined to take the tournament one game at a time as they aim for a place in the last four.
