Erik ten Hag faces criticism for substituting Marcus Rashford during Europa League draw

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is under fire for his decision to substitute Marcus Rashford at halftime during their 3-3 Europa League draw against Porto. The move has sparked criticism from fans and pundits, including former goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, who questioned the manager’s judgment.

Rashford was a key player in the first half, scoring a goal and providing an assist. His substitution left many puzzled, as he had been one of United’s top performers in the match.

Why Ten Hag Substituted Rashford

Ten Hag explained that the decision was part of a planned rotation to keep players fresh ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against Aston Villa.

“We have to rotate. We didn’t start Garnacho, and Rashford needed to be rested for Sunday,” Ten Hag said. “It’s a quick turnaround, and we need players to be fresh for the Villa game.”

Hislop’s Criticism of Ten Hag

Shaka Hislop, an ESPN pundit, was critical of the decision, arguing that a player like Rashford, who was finding his form, should have been allowed to stay on the pitch.

“You don’t take off a player who’s in form and carrying the team,” said Hislop. “To take him off at halftime, especially for rotation, left me completely baffled.”

Hislop also compared the situation to how Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola manages key players, suggesting Guardiola would not have made the same call.

What’s Next for Manchester United?

Manchester United now turns their attention to the Premier League, where they face a tough away match against Aston Villa on Sunday, October 6. The Red Devils will be looking to bounce back from their recent draws and get back to winning form.
